As you read this, 3D TVs are hitting the shelves, and at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas it was the big buzz. I haven't seen manufacturers push a new technology with such an enormous streamlined effort since the launch of DVD 15 years ago. Check out our CES Report starting on page 20 for more show details.
One of the most consistent questions we've been asked at E-Gear about 3D technology is: What about the 3D glasses? Will different manufacturers' glasses work with other TVs? Say if I have a 3D set from LG, will their glasses work with a set from Panasonic? At the moment no, but this is an area again where the manufacturers realize that they have to play nice and work together for the good of the technology.
A couple of companies who are outside of consumer electronics are working on universal 3D eyeware and the Consumer Electronics Association is working with competing manufacturers to agree on a standard for 3D eyeware as soon as possible. Reps from cable and broadcasting companies, TV manufacturers, eyeware folks and more are diligently pulling together to get a standard to market. In the meantime, look for the next issue of E-Gear where we do a complete roundup of the 3D sets that are currently available. We'll look at tech specs, sizes and pricing to help you decide which 3D set will grace your own home theater space!
From the here-we-go-again department: Mobile voice-recognition technology has had its ups and downs, however you can now send text messages to friends by talking instead of typing; to scan through transcriptions of voicemail instead of taking time to listen to them all; to tell your phone what you're looking for on the Web; and, soon, to post to Twitter from your car by speaking, allowing you to keep your eyes on the road. Phones should know by now exactly what Web link to find and users should get a result without ever typing.
A number of phone apps, from ShoutOut to Dragon and Vlingo, now translate speech into text messages and e-mails. Additionally, Bing and Google both have mobile applications that let people search the Web by talking. We'll keep advising you on these new technologies, so stay tuned!
