AT&T Ad Goes After Verizon

AT&T is already fighting Verizon Wireless’ "There’s a Map For That" campaign in court, but now the carrier has struck back at its rival in an advertisement of its own, touting AT&T as "a better 3G experience."

Featuring actor Luke Wilson, the AT&T ad, which debuted earlier this week, has Wilson standing in front of a checklist with "AT&T" and "Verizon" at the top. As Wilson goes through the criteria of who gives customers  the best 3G experience. For "the nation’s fastest 3G network," ability to talk and surf the Web at the same time, "the most popular smartphones," and "access to over 100,000 apps," Wilson places an X next to AT&T’s box, while granting Verizon only "name that starts with the letter V."

While the Verizon ads have slammed the iPhone, the AT&T advertisement does not mention the AT&T-exclusive device specifically, but clearly refers to the iPhone in terms of "most popular smartphone" and access to the apps.

  1. Why didn’t the new AT&T commercial also compare the 3G coverage maps?

I guess AT&T "forgot" to include the little part about Verizon having 5 *TIMES* the coverage. (Not double, not triple, but *FIVE* times.)

I think AT&T should have just shown the maps.
(And then filed a lawsuit against itself!)

  2. Bonnie,

Probably because it doesn’t matter if you cover a bunch of land where there are no people. Did you notice the percent population covered by AT&T is higher than Verizon?

Granted, if those people travel away from home through unpopulated areas, then coverage probably will not be 3G, just EDGE, oh no!

  3. I have an iPhone and a Verizon phone. I love my iPhone (I’m using it to post this
message) but AT&T service really really bites. It wouldn’t surf when I was at a red sox game (network overload) and has dropped literally 25% of the dozen or so calls I’ve made over 5 months! Then again the Verizon droid phones are slooooooow surfing compared to the iPhone. I have been trying to decide which service to drop for 5 months now. Sigh.

  4. This ad series is the worst thing I’ve seen on TV in a long time. If I was in the market for a new phone – I’d cross AT&T off just because of the rude, flippant spokesperson featured in the ads. Come on, are you people condoning this kind of surley behaviour? There is enough of this kind of rude stuff going on without ads like this encourging it. Shame on you – I’ll NEVER own an AT&T product again.
