Video game sales in the month of October dropped 19 percent from the same period the year before, while the Nintendo Wii overtook the PlayStation 3 as the highest-selling console, according to sales figures released Friday by the NPD Group.
NPD found that sales were $1.07 billion. Hardware dropped 23 percent, while software dropped 28 percent and accessories fell 2 percent.
The PlayStation 3, on the strength of its recent price cut, had taken the top spot in September, but Nintendo’s Wii price cut put it back on top in October.
NPD predicted a strong holiday season for the gaming sector, leading to annual revenues only slightly below last year’s level.
