After months of declines, the U.S. video game industry posted positive growth in September- and the PlayStation 3 took the number one spot for the month for the first time in its history. That’s according to figures released this week by NPD Group, as cited by Reuters.

NPD found that combined sales of gaming hardware and software rose 1 percent in the month over the same period last year. The PS3, meanwhile, overtook the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360, thanks to the release of its new, slimmer, and less expensive (by $100) edition.

The subsequent Wii price cut was not reflected in the results, as it went into effect the last week in September.

The number one game for the month was the Xbox-only "Halo 3," followed by "Wii Sports Resort" and "Madden NFL ’10."
