Three of the major CE companies that back Blu-ray are spearheading an effort to put together a "one-stop-shop license" for Blu-ray Disc product, in order to stimulate the market for the technology.
Panasonic, Philips and Sony are leading the effort, along with unspecified other patent holders of the technology.
"By establishing a new licensing entity that offers a single license for Blu-ray Disc products at attractive rates, I am confident that it will foster the growth of the Blu-ray Disc market and serve the interest of all companies participating in this market, be it as licensee or licensor," Gerald Rosenthal, a former IBM intellectual property head and the CEO of the new effort, said as part of the announcement.
The license will officially become available in the middle of this year.
