Toshiba America Consumer Products, while emphasizing its multi-tiered REGZA LCD product offerings and the various improvements it is including at all performance and pricing levels, is planning to demonstrate prototypes at CES incorporating the Cell TV platform: a technology that vice president of TV marketing Scott Ramirez said portends the future direction of REGZA design.

One prototype, to show real-time super resolution, he said, consists of a set-top box and a separate, 56-inch 4k-by-2k LCD panel, with the box housing upconverting circuitry which applies Resolution+ technology combined with a new noise-reduction solution.

The other prototype, using a 55-inch backlit LCD panel, shows the possibility of high-speed control of the panel’s local dimming. “This technology is in a category all its own. It’s the cleanest picture you’ve ever seen,” remarked Ramirez, noting the panel can display up to six high-definition images simultaneously.

While the company goal is eventually to deliver multiple REGZA models incorporating the high-speed-broadband Cell TV platform, Toshiba has significantly ratcheted up the image quality and performance capabilities on the newest REGZA SKUs, which range in screen size from 19 inches to 55 inches.

The flagship SV670 Series, as an example, will include a new Infinity Flush Front design cosmetic that doesn’t show a discernable screen edge and offers what Ramirez called the best chassis and the best contrast ratio on its two models (46 inches and 55 inches).  The sets also include Toshiba’s PixelPure 5G engine with its 14-bit digital video processor. Another prominent feature is ClearScan 240, which creates a synergistic performance benefit by combining a 120Hz scan rate with Toshiba’s new Backlight Scanning technology, for a 240Hz “effect.”

AutoView technology, an ambient light sensor built into the sets, adjusts picture parameters depending upon room lighting. And Toshiba has licensed Dolby’s Dolby Volume technology, which keeps listening levels consistent between different programming.

The company also plans to bring out a series later in the year that includes TV Widgets, enabled by the Widget Channel Framework, allowing viewers access to Internet content through their remote control.

Toshiba is also bolstering its market edge in combination LCD TV/DVD players, adding thinner models to its line and a new translucent-look chassis. It is also making its 15-inch, 19-inch and 22-inch combo sets available in either high-gloss black or high-gloss white. In combos, a new 26-inch size is being added this year, said Yoshi Uchiyama, senior vice president of the Digital A/V Group.
