The camera boasts a 16.1-megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor—the same image sensor format Sony uses in itsfull-size DSLRs. With 13 times the area of the typical point-and-shoot sensor, it delivers high resolution, high sensitivity and creative blurred backgrounds that will turn your snapshots into photographs.

The NEX-6’s fast hybrid autofocus system combines phase- and contrast-detection autofocus so you always get a crisp shot: it uses 99 phase-detection AF points on the sensor to detect your subject’s distance and direction to lock focus on it, and then uses contrast-detection AF to confirm fine focus detail. And with sensitivities settings as high as ISO 25,600, you’ll be sure to get the shot even in low-light conditions. Shooting sports, no problem; the NEX-6 can capture fast-moving subjects at 10 frames per second.

For framing the perfect shot, the NEX-6’s high-res electronic viewfinder gives a bright, detailed, high-contrast view of images and video, with 100% frame coverage and a wide field of view. On-screen grid lines and a digital level gauge can be displayed to assist with framing. This EVF is complemented by a large, 3.0-inch LCD that can be angled 90° up or 45° down for viewing in virtually any shooting position.

And for hands-on control of camera functions, a topside DSLR-style mode dial gives you quick access to commonly used shooting modes, including manual and sweep panorama. There’s also a control wheel on the back for fine adjustments of exposure, ISO, white balance and other settings, while its Quick Navi interface lets you make fingertip adjustments without taking the viewfinder away from your eye.

The camera also features: a pop-up flash; Full HD 1080p movie shooting with an auto slow shutter feature that adds detail to low-light clips; 11 picture effects and creative styles to add panache to your photos; a multi-interface shoe for attaching optional accessories; and integrated Wi-Fi that wirelessly transfers photos to a smartphone or tablet running Sony’s free PlayMemories Mobile app (Android and Apple iOS). Content can also be directly uploaded from the NEX-6 to your Facebook page using a Wi-Fi connection and Sony’s Direct Upload app.

Sony’s NEX-6 compact system camera comes bundled with a 16–50mm f/3.5–5.6 zoom lens for $1,000. It also sells body only for $850. sony.com
