Camera Review

Golden, CO—Pentax Imaging’s Optio S1 digital compact camera is designed with advanced, easy-to-use features and a gem-like finish for spring styling.

Available in chrome or a glossy black or green, the Optio S1 sports an ultralight body featuring: a 14 megapixel sensor; a wide-angle 5x optical zoom lens (28-140mm); a 2.7 inch LCD screen; Pentax’s sensor-shift shake reduction (SR) system to fight blurring in low-light and telephoto images; widescreen 720p HD video capture at 30 frames per second with SR; and  High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode for capturing detail in wide exposure images (new to Pentax digital compact cameras).

Also employed is a an “intelligent” zoom function that allows tighter zooming in on the subject, extending the digital zoom range up to 33.5x with no loss of image fidelity, according to Pentax.

For worry-free picture taking, Pentax included fast face detection, smile capture and blink detection for better people pictures, and an auto picture mode. This set-it-and-forget-it mode detects 14 different subjects and scene types, such as people, landscape, blue sky and sunset. The mode optimizes all camera settings, like sensitivity and shutter speed, for the type of subject and scene identified.

For those who want to add a creative flair to their photos without using a computer, the Optio S1 offers nine digital filters, including toy camera and retro. A new miniature filter converts any scene into an image full of miniatures, and an HDR filter (first ever on a Pentax compact) produces images with “outstanding exposure detail in wide exposure situations.”

The Optio S1 supports infrared remote control (remote purchased separately) and will be available in March for an MSRP of $199.95. pentaximaging.com
