Waterproof Camera Review

Secaucus, NJ—Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-TS3, the successor to the waterproof TS2, is designed for active users who want to capture photos and 1,920×1,080 Full HD videos.

The TS3 incorporates a rugged design and new outdoor-friendly features, such as a built-in GPS (Global Positioning System) function, a compass, altimeter and barometer. The 12.1 megapixel camera is waterproof to 40 feet, shockproof to 6.6 feet, freezeproof to 14º F and dustproof.

Its 28mm wide-angle Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens, with a folded optics design and optical zoom up to 4.6x, works even while shooting video underwater. New Intelligent Resolution technology and its intelligent zoom function work to extend the zoom to a 6x equivalent.

Panasonic’s 3D photo mode is included to produce a realistic 3D photo by taking 20 consecutive photos and overlaying the two best to create a 3D image that can be played on a Panasonic Viera 3D HDTV. The 3D images can also be viewed on other MPO-compatible devices, such as a TVs, digital photo frames and printers. Additional features include: the Lumix Image Uploader for sharing via Facebook or YouTube; Dolby Digital Creator for high-quality audio; a built-in LED light to support shooting in dark situations; a 2.7-inch antireflective LCD; and Panasonic’s iA mode, a suite of auto-engaging technologies that now offers more powerful image stabilization for video recording and taking photos in active mode. iA includes face recognition, face detection, AF tracking, intelligent ISO control, intelligent scene selector and intelligent exposure.

The TS3’s GPS function shows the name of the country/region, state/county, county/township, city/town/village and landmark by using the internal data to give users details on where the photos or videos were taken. Plus, more than 1 million landmarks in over 78 countries/regions are in the database. Using the included PHOTOfunSTUDIO 6.1 HD Lite software, photos/videos can be searched by location and names. And, an internal clock automatically adjusts to the local time when GPS is enabled. $399.99. panasonic.com
