Golden, CO—Pentax Imaging announced the Pentax O-GPS1 unit for its recent digital SLRs. A weather-resistant GPS unit, the device tracks basic geographical and celestial body location data for earthbound and astrophotography purposes.

Mounted on the hot shoe of select Pentax DSLRs, the O-GPS1 records latitude, longitude and altitude of shooting locations within the captured image files, along with the universal time coordinated (UTC). Image files with this GPS data may be used to track shooting locations and review location data on a personal computing device.

In addition to location data, which can also help sort and file recorded images, the GPS unit works with the Pentax Shake Reduction (SR) system to offer advanced applications, including Astrotracer, Simple Navigation and Electronic Compass.

Together, the O-GPS1 and associated applications offer several key functions, such as: geotagging images for location information on popular photo-sharing websites; charting progress of a hike, bike, boat or other adventure trip with interval position tracking; a separate, efficient power source that will not drain the camera’s battery during GPS operation; support for terrestrial-based Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) for highly accurate positioning; and an electronic compass function to assist navigation.

The Pentax O-GPS1 unit will ship in July 2011 and is available for preorder on pentaxwebstore.com for $249.95. pentaximaging.com
