Digital Camera Review

The Canon EOS 7D digital SLR is a new advanced amateur camera many professional photographers will also find up to their standards. The 7D has an 18 megapixel Canon CMOS sensor and dual Digic 4 imaging processors to fuel its 14-bit A/D data conversion and its ability to freeze fast motion in high res with 8-fps continuous shooting (126 large JPEGS using a UDMA CF card). What that means to the advanced amateur is that the camera will take your photos to the next level. You will see professional image quality out of the Canon EOS 7D.

New features like a zone AF mode, a 19-point autofocus system, a Canon iFCL metering system (intelligent focus, color, luminance) with a 63-zone dual-layer metering sensor that reads both illumination and color, and a new 1.0x magnification intelligent viewfinder with 100 percent coverage make it an attractive mid-range DSLR.

Combine that with the ability to record Full HD video at 1,920×1,080 resolution with selectable frame rates of cinematic 24p, 25p or 30p and fully manual exposure control, and the Canon EOS 7D “is poised as the ultimate step-up camera for serious photographers or a second camera for professionals in the field.”

The incredible wide range of ISO speed settings from 100-6400 (expandable to 12,800) allow you to capture low-light images with or without a flash with the 7D.

Canon is calling it the most functional and innovative DSLR they have released to date, bringing together all of the best professional features offered, along with many user requests at a price point everyone can appreciate.

The EOS 7D’s AF system improvements are a benefit for a wide range of shooting situations. The camera has three video recording modes – Full HD and HD in a 16:9 aspect ratio and standard definition (SD) in a 4:3 aspect ratio, all at selectable frame rates. The EOS 7D also has a dedicated button to turn on live view for both video and still shooting. Once it is engaged, the same button starts and stops video recording. Photographers can also use an external stereo microphone for pro audio effects or a built-in monaural microphone for convenience.

The Canon EOS 7D is a feature rich digital SLR that includes an artificial horizon over the image on the LCD in live view or in the viewfinder for leveling while shooting; a pop-up flash with an integrated Speedlite transmitter for control of multiple off-camera EOS Speedlites without the need for an external transmitter; an intelligent macro tracking function that help reduce blur during macro shooting by recognizing when a macro lens is attached and automatically adjusting the AI servo sampling frequency; a quick control button that opens a menu on the camera’s 3.0-inch, 920,000-dot LCD to adjust all settings; and a RAW/JPEG toggle button that provides dual-format shooting.

The Canon 7D DSLR will be available this month as body-only with an estimated price of $1,699. It will also be offered in a kit with Canon’s EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom lens for $1,899.

Along with the introduction of the EOS 7D, Canon announced three EF and EF-S lenses: the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM; EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM; and the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. The EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS lens is the first to employ Canon’s new Hybrid Image Stabilization (Hybrid IS) technology, developed to compensate for both angle camera shake and shift camera shake, up to four shutter speed steps. The EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM ($1,049.00) is compatible with all EOS cameras, while the EF-S 15-85mm ($799.99) and EF-S 18-135mm ($499.99) zoom lenses are designed specifically for Canon digital cameras that are compatible with EF-S lenses.
