Photo and Video Editing Software Review

Ottawa, Canada—Corel released PaintShop Photo Pro X3, the latest version of its photo-editing software that now includes HD video editing. The company also announced an enhanced version of its consumer video-editing software, VideoStudio Pro X3.

PaintShop Photo Pro X3. Combining pro-level tools for organizing and editing along with burning, sharing and, for the first time, high-definition (HD) video editing, Pro X3 was developed to meet the workflow needs of today’s digital photographers, who high-res image and HD video collections are rapidly growing.

New features include: an organizer for rating, tagging, locating and quickly touching up images, and with a few clicks, converting RAW images to another format for posting or printing; multi-photo adjustments that make changes made to one image easily applied to multiple photos; Smart Carver, which removes objects and scales without distortion; Express Lab, which brings the most used tools together in one place (color balance, local tone mapping, contrast/brightness, sharpen, one-step noise removal); Camera RAW Lab, with support for over 350 RAW formats to make it easy to adjust settings such as white balance, exposure, brightness and saturation before processing; Object Extractor to mask fine details that are difficult to preserve, like flyaway hair; and Project Creator, to create, edit and share projects online in a few clicks, like photo books, collages, cards, calendars, slideshows and HD video.

PaintShop Photo Pro X3 continues to offer HDR photo merge, local tone mapping, curves and levels adjustments and perspective correction, as well as the Learning Center. It includes Painter Photo Essentials 4 with an auto-painting palette to create realistic artwork from a photo in three steps. $99.99; $79.99 for the upgrade.

Corel VideoStudio Pro X3. For video enthusiasts, it combines editing, media authoring, real-time effects and DVD/Blu-ray burning, performing tasks more than twice as fast as previously. It also offers multi-core and GPU parallel processing (including Intel Core i7) with support for new technologies like NVIDIA CUDA.

Highlights include: GPU acceleration with speed improvements across the application, delivering Corel FX effects, 3D transitions, trim and multi-trim in real time; the ability to make modifications to one video clip, photo, title, transition or effect copied to another; online sharing capabilities with uploading to Facebook, Flickr, Vimeo and YouTube; new visual effects that turn a video segment or image into a simulated drawing, and multi-track overlay effects; and the mood-mapping music generator from SmartSound to permit the control of individual instruments in music tracks. $99.99; $79.99 for the upgrade. corel.com
