Want to add paper effects to photos, making them look like they were sketched, colored, or painted by Andy Warhol? Well, Paper Camera for iOS and Android is designed to do just that.
There are a total of 12 effects that can be used. Each one is designed to make the photo look like it was either drawn in some fashion, or printed on an older style of paper, like a dot-matrix printer or old “Granny paper.” The app’s defining feature is that this isn’t just a post-processing app, as the app can actually add effects to photographs as they are taken, with up to 6 settings per effect that can be changed and previewed live. Even videos with the various effects can be captured. Of course, it’s still possible to import photos from the device itself.
Oddly, it seems as if there’s no way to switch from being in photo import mode back to live camera taking mode. This is a minor annoyance, solved by quitting and reopening the app. Many of the effects do require a lot of tinkering with in order to be semi-viewable. It’s really just a shame, though some effects will be more naturally tuned to different photo types, so it’s just about experimentation.
This is definitely an app for those who want to have some fun taking random photos, and/or playing around with different effects. The ability to see effects live makes the app very user-friendly, and it’s fun to play around with, though only those who love to use these styles of effects will find the app valuable in the long-term.
Paper Camera is available as a universal app for iOS from the App Store, and for Android from Google Play.
