In 2003, Steve Carell got his cinematic big break playing a tongue-tied anchorman in “Bruce Almighty,” Jim Carrey’s last gigantic box office hit. Ten years later, Carell, now a headliner, has reunited with Carrey for “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.”
Carell plays the title character, a famous, long-in-the-tooth magician who faces competition from a Criss Angelesque street magician (Carrey).
Here’s the trailer:
I really hope the movie doesn’t end up like “Blades of Glory,” which just reveled in the absurdity of glittery costumes and 80’s-styled wigs instead of trying to amuse us. But the preview looks really promising, primarily because the cast is deceptively deep. People get overwhelmed by Olivia Wilde’s exotic beauty, but she’s becoming a solid actress who can hold scenes with folks like Eric Bana and Dennis Quaid. And people forget how terrific Carrey was in “I Love You Phillip Morris,” a movie that was plagued by delays.
And Alan Arkin is in it, people. Alan Arkin! Just seeing seeing that crazy banana makes me smile. And Steve Buscemi! Ah geez…I know I should be alarmed by the March release date, but, ah, screw it…I’m in.
“The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” open March 15. It’s directed by veteran TV director Don Scardino (“30 Rock”).
