SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers for the Doctor Who Christmas Special, “The Snowmen.” If you haven’t seen it yet, seriously, go check that out!
In a Christmas special based on a previously unused Douglas Adams script, the Doctor has had enough. Enough adventure, enough heartbreak and enough loss. Following the deaths of Amy and Rory Pond, he’s retired to the TARDIS and isn’t interested in saving worlds anymore. There are two things guaranteed to shake the Doctor out of a funk: a pretty girl and a centuries-spanning mystery. Enter the lovely Clara, who offers both. She appears to meet her end during the episode, going on the unfortunate list of companions offered a key to the TARDIS but dying before they could accept.
Before her “death,” she offers up a clue. Then the Doctor realizes he encountered her before, in the episode “Asylum of the Daleks.” That time she died too. And turned out to be a Dalek. Double bummer. Cut to a preview of the new series, where we see Clara standing over her own grave. She declares that she doesn’t believe in ghosts.
The Doctor, traveling through time to find her, is clearly smitten. He’s not alone. Both the character name “Clara Oswin Oswald” and the actress’ name, “Jenna-Louise Coleman,” quickly became hot search items. We’re still learning about the enigmatic Clara, but Coleman has quite a body – ahem, body of work for us to peruse.
She first got noticed on the British soap opera Emmerdale as lesbian student Jasmine Thomas. She has also appeared in BBC’s adaptation of the novel Room At The Top. FHM Magazine named her to its list of 100 Sexiest Women, solidifying her international sex symbol status. Now she’s snagged a career defining role on the latest incarnation of the popular sci-fi series.
Coleman told the Daily Mail she was only able to tell close family members, and had to swear them to secrecy. She told her other friends she didn’t get the part she was auditioning for. Not only did she get the part, she’s earning rave reviews from a fanbase notoriously hard to please. On message boards, she’s already drawing comparisons to one of the Doctor’s most beloved companions, Sarah Jane Smith.
The actress is currently dating Game of Thrones castmember Richard Madden, who is a longtime fan of the show. Coleman had never seen it before she landed this role. Doctor Who and Game of Thrones? Here are the early favorites for “Favorite Nerd Show Couple of 2013.”
