The formula of “star-studded HBO adaptation of a long-ago New York stage hit about AIDS” worked very well for the award-winning mini-series of Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America” in 2013.

Now, ten years later, HBO is readying an adaptation of another such play, Larry Kramer’s “The Normal Heart.”

Ryan Murphy, co-creator of Glee and American Horror Story, will direct the film, which will star Julia Roberts and Mark Ruffalo. The play, which debuted in 1985 and was revived in 2011, is about the group of activists in the early days of the AIDS epidemic, Kramer among them, who fought for survival.

The recent documentary “How to Survive a Plague” was about similar subject matter and also featured Kramer, but was set a few years later than the play. The “Normal Heart” movie is expected to air in 2014.
