. The app was announced during Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs during the company’s keynote presentation at International CES in Las Vegas Monday.
Actress Alice Eve (from “She’s Out of My League,”) who will appear in the new film as Dr. Carol Marcus, joined Jacobs on stage to talk about the app, which is powered by Qualcomm’s Vuforia technology. The app will include audio and image scan technologies, new content and special offers.
“We are excited about collaborating with Paramount on this app as it further brings to life Qualcomm’s vision of the digital sixth sense, where devices intelligently interact with the world around you,” Jacobs said in a statement. “By leveraging the Gimbal platform, this app harnesses the power of the smartphone to bridge the digital and physical world, allowing the studio to market the film in the real world and simultaneously bring users into the film’s story and world.”
The app will launch in January, with more information to come during a TV commercial that will air during the Super Bowl in Februrary. “Star Trek: Into Darkness,” directed by J.J. Abrams, comes out May 17.
