Barack and Michelle Obama danced to Beyonce’s rendition of “At Last” four years ago, and she stopped the show again this time. Joined by the U.S. Marine Band, Beyonce delivered a version of “The Star Spangled Banner” that has people talking. She will also perform at the Super Bowl halftime show, which will include a Destiny’s Child reunion. It’s a good time to be Beyonce. But really, when isn’t it?
Simon Cowell had to be proud of his American Idol alumni, as both Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson featured prominently in the festivities. Kelly Clarkson belted out “My Country Tis of Thee” to rave reviews. Ultimately, former President Bill Clinton found a way to steal the show with a photo bomb.
It’s OK, Kelly. He upstages Hillary all the time too.
Jennifer Hudson performed the Al Green classic “Let’s Stay Together” at the Commander in Chief’s ball- a song the president has been known to croon himself- while the Obamas danced. Barack has crooned a little Al Green himself, so we know he’s a fan. With all due respect to the president, Jennifer’s version is better. Is anybody else worried Idol has peaked? Somehow, I don’t expect to see Kris Allen or Lee DeWyze playing the inauguration four years from now.
Crooner James Taylor delivered a very classy “America The Beautiful” between the Obama and Biden swearing ins. In typical Taylor fashion, he used only an acoustic guitar. That’s really all he needs to bring a great performance.
