Batman’s movies have undergone a renaissance recently. Poor Superman, he’s still longing for the glory days of the Christopher Reeve era. Warner Bros’ latest attempt to make Superman a movie star again is coming June 14 with “Man of Steel.” DC Comics is doing its part to drum up excitement too. It will re-release Action Comics #844, co-written by Geoff Johns and Richard Donner, director of 1978’s “Superman.”
It’s the first part of the “Last Son” storyline that pits Supes against General Zod and villains from the Phantom Zone. Zod is the antagonist in Zack Snyder’s new film. Boardwalk Empire’s Michael Shannon will try to make Henry Cavill’s hero kneel in this one. Russell Crowe transitions from playing the buff cinematic hero to the wise father phase of his career as Jor-El, Superman’s dad. Kevin Costner plays the hero’s adopted father, Jonathan Kent.
The event is coming for May 4’s Free Comic Book Day. That’s a promotion in which the industry reaches out to new and current readers with the time honored ploy of freebies. A new Superman movie is a great opportunity to get some new comic readers.
The re-release will also include a preview of the new Superman comic written by Scott Snyder with art by Jim Lee. Warner Bros. and DC are counting on “Man of Steel” to make this a super summer.
