Two of Hollywood’s biggest comedic workhorses may be in the running for roles in Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The spacefaring heroes are like The Avengers for the entire universe. Now Disney/Marvel is ready to transition them from cult classic comic stars to a box office blockbuster.
Neither Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler leaps immediately to mind when you think of superheroes, other than Carrey’s showing as “The Mask.” Two of the Guardians, Rocket Raccoon and Groot ( a treelike alien) will likely be computer generated. Carrey and Sandler would probably be lending voices to CGI characters, if these rumors are true.
Sandler’s latest films haven’t done well. A starring turn in a Marvel blockbuster would certainly be a career boost. And unlike “Jack and Jill,” it wouldn’t require cross dressing or seduction scenes with Al Pacino.
The Guardians profile has been steadily increasing within the Marvel universe, which we now know is no coincidence. Marvel is relaunching the comic in March. Nova and Rocket Raccoon appear in the most recent installment of the Marvel vs Capcom fighting game series. The team also appeared on the Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes cartoon, establishing their connection to the more well-known heroes. Thanos, a villain who features prominently in Guardians stories, had a brief cameo at the end of “The Avengers.”
