.) “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters,” $19M–Pretty good take considering that the movie didn’t screen for critics, which is usually a kiss of death. Just look at “Movie 43,” which made $5 million its opening weekend and has been disavowed by just about everyone involved.
.)“Mama”, $12.9M–Back to “Movie 43,” because I’m fascinated. Todd Cunningham at The Wrap reports that most of the actors in this ensemble sketch comedy (Naomi Watts, Emma Stone, Gerard Butler, Richard Gere) worked for scale. The budget was $6 million. Julie Salamon has to write a book about the production and its aftermath.
.) “Silver Linings Playbook,” $10M–If anyone can give me a good reason why Jacki Weaver got an Academy Award nomination, I will give you a gazillion dollars…in Monopoly money.
.) “Zero Dark Thirty,” $9.8M–In ten years, people will calm down and realize that the movie is superb on its own, not because it’s capitalizing on current events.
.) “Parker,” $7M–Seeing Jennifer Lopez in another caper movie makes me nostalgic for “Out of Sight.” Speaking of which: Filmmakers, please don’t remake “Out of Sight.”
