Kermit the Frog revealed to EW that the new movie, now in production and scheduled for release March 21, 2014, will be titled “The Muppets… Again!,” and confirmed that the non-Muppet cast is led by Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey and Ty Burrell.
The film’s plot has more in common with “The Great Muppet Caper” than any other past entry in the franchise. It involves a jewel thief named Constantine- a Muppet who, Bizarro Superman-like, is a dead ringer for Kermit himself- who gets tangled with the Muppets, who are in the midst of a triumphant world tour. Gervais plays the villain’s sidekick, with Fey playing a Russian prison guard and Burrell as Interpol agent.
In the interview, Kermit told EW that plans for the new movie caused Fozzie is miss out on hibernating, and the Dr. Teeth band to miss out on a bar gig in Hoboken (presumably at Maxwell’s.)
Human stars Jason Segel and Amy Adams won’t be back, but director James Bobin, co-writer Nicolas Stoller and composer Bret Mackenzie have returned.
