Maurice Sendak, author of Where the Wild Things Are and other beloved childrens’ books, died Tuesday at the age of 83.
Sendak, born in Brooklyn in 1928, was known for both writing and illustrating his books. His popular works included In the Night Kitchen (1970) and Outside Over There (1981), which followed the publication in 1963 of Where the Wild Things Are.
He was preceded in death by his partner of 50 years, Eugene Glynn, who died in 2007.
In January, Sendak made a memorable appearance on The Colbert Report:
