The CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, which for several years now has drawn ratings and mainstream success in nearly inverse proportion to its quality, will return for a ninth and final season next fall, CBS and production company 20th Century Fox confirmed Wednesday, according to Vulture.
The return had been reported weeks ago but was not official until Wednesday.
The series, which premiered in 2005, follows the adventures of young romantic Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor), and has the framing device of Ted (voiced by Bob Saget) telling his children how he met their mother. He’s been telling the story now for nearly eight years- including a whole lot of stuff that’s very much not appropriate for father/child conversation- but the titular mother has still not appeared.
Creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas promise the mother will be revealed, but did not say when.
