Deadline is reporting that Revenge star Emily VanCamp is ready to sign on for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” No word yet on what character she’ll play, but a likely candidate is Cap’s love interest Sharon Carter. She’s the hero’s love interest and the niece of Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter character. Getting frozen in ice for 70 years puts in a crimp in your dating.
VanCamp has also had roles on Everwood and ABC’s Brothers and Sisters. She’s risen to fame as Emily Thorne/Amanda Clarke on Revenge. VanCamp plays a young woman seeking the destruction of the wealthy elite who framed her father for terrorism.
We know that Toby Jones will return as Nazi scientist Arnim Zola. In the comics, he’s more machine than man these days. Since his creations fought Captain America during World War II, the movie is probably pursuing a similar path. Also confirmed is “Gangster Squad’s” Anthony Mackie as The Falcon, Captain America’s sidekick.
In the comics, “The Winter Soldier” is Cap’s first sidekick, James Buchanan Barnes, better known as “Bucky.” It turns out he survived World War II as well, but was brainwashed to be a Russian assassin. When not on the job, the government keeps him in cryogenic stasis. Hence the moniker “Winter Soldier” and the reason he’s only aged to young adulthood.
“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is slated for an April 4, 2014 release date.
