Not unpredictably, the Parents’ Television Council is calling on advertisers to boycott America’s Got Talent because of Howard Stern.
The shock jock and self-proclaimed “King of All Media” replaces Piers Morgan as the third judge on the panel, along with Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel. I’m assuming Stern will be the “mean judge.” NBC execs and Stern’s co-hosts have stated he will not be performing his typical radio antics.
The PTC’s letter to potential Talent advertisers features some of Stern’s comments about American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino. Stern was at one time rumored to be a judge for that talent competition. Stern said Barrino wasn’t “giving little boys boners – they want a Britney Spears or Rihanna.”
The letter also asks what qualifies Stern to judge a talent show. The same could have been said about his predecessor Morgan. Stern has at least performed comedy before. He’s made a staggering amount of money doing it. His brand of comedy might not be to your liking, and it’s certainly not PC. He’s probably more qualified to be a judge than Ellen DeGeneres was for American Idol, which is strictly a singing competition.
These complaints about Stern are far from new. The PTC began crying foul the second NBC hired Stern in December. America’s Got Talent premieres May 14, so that’s why we’re hearing another round of displeasure from them.
