A group of online movie critics has produced poll of the greatest movies of all time that may have the same #1 as most surveys of its kind, but diverges a bit lower down the list.
The poll, conducted by Filmschoolrejects.com, has Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane” in the top spot, with “The Godfather” third, “Casablanca” fifth, Fellini’s “8 1/2″ sixth and Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” eighth.
However, the survey’s #2 film, “The Empire Strikes Back,” is not quite a perennial of best-movies-ever lists, nor is #7 “Back to the Future.”
A recent BFI Sight & Sound poll also put Kane first, and even had five and a half of the same top ten as Film School Rejects (Sight & Sound had the first two “Godfather” films as one entity.)
The Film School Rejects survey was of 37 critics and four filmmakers, and the site editors described the electorate as skewing younger. I didn’t participate in the survey but for the record, I’d have voted “Casablanca” #1.
