For as long as I can remember, there have been two Ryan Howards in the Eastern half of Pennsylvania: The Philadelphia Phillies first baseman, and the Scranton-based character on The Office, played by B.J. Novak. They’ve been around for about the same amount of time, too- Howard the baseball player was a rookie in 2005, while Howard the character made his debut when The Office started that same year.
But the universe of one Howard is about to invade the other, with the news that Howard the Phillie will guest-star on an episode of The Office to air in late March
ESPN the Magazine was the first to report that Howard will appear on the show, as part of the storyline that involves Jim (John Krasinski) attempting to establish a Philadelphia-based sports marketing firm.
Will the Ryan Howards meet? Perhaps not- Novak, and his character, left the series prior to the current season. But I’d be surprised not to see at least a line of dialogue referencing the two men with the same name.
The Office spot won’t mark Howard’s first sitcom appearance. He is one of many Philadelphia athletes who have made guest appearances on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
