Despite capturing the spotlight for the first time as a rap artist going by the stage name of Marky Mark (I can’t even write that with a straight face), Mark Wahlberg has always come off as a smart guy in recent years.
The Boston-born actor has been nominated for two Oscars and has helped build the Entourage and Boardwalk Empire hits from the producer chair, which is pretty darn impressive. And yet not all of his post-Marky Mark decisions have been the wisest.
For one, he’s not only starred, but produced the fresh “Broken City” flop. Furthermore, he’s apparently turned down a role in the 2009 “Star Trek” reboot because… he didn’t understand the script. Yup, those were his exact words, “I tried to read the script and I couldn’t even do that, I didn’t understand the words, the dialogue or anything.”
That would have been understandable if he had been offered the part of a Klingon character or something, but he was supposed to be George Kirk. You know, Captain Kirk’s papa.
It’s not that “Star Trek” would have put Wahlberg’s career on a different path (we are talking after all about a minor role in the movie), but really, Mark, you couldn’t get the script?!? Or, to quote one of my all-time favorite movie lines, “English, mother…, do you speak it”?
