Terrence Malick was until recently notorious in Hollywood for very carefully picking his projects, which didn’t exactly make him a prolific director, but one who seemed to value quality over quantity.
However, after directing only four movies in over three decades (1978-2011), he apparently changed his entire perspective on filmmaking all of a sudden and took on four new projects which he planned to complete in just two years.
And the first one is ready to hit theaters. Called “To the Wonder”, this romantic drama has debuted at last year’s Venice and Toronto film festivals, being scheduled to land in US cinemas come mid-April.
The latest trailer is in, looking exactly as you’d expect. Gorgeously shot, ambiguous and teasing a very heavy main theme – love. Just like with “The Tree of Life,” Malick seems to focus on a small, but highly skilled cast.
The male actors are again safe bets – Ben Affleck and Javier Bardem instead of Brad Pitt and Sean Penn – while the female performers look like gambles. But Jessica Chastain showed the world once and for all that she was in Hollywood to stay, so why wouldn’t Olga Kurylenko and Rachel McAdams also prove they’re more than just pretty faces?
All in all, “To the Wonder” might not have as much Oscar material as “The Tree of Life”, but it surely looks intriguing, doesn’t it?
