Disney made the move that has been considered a foregone conclusion since it acquired Lucasfilm. In a release titled “A New Direction for Lucasfilm Animation,” it confirmed the popular animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars series is cancelled on Cartoon Network. The release goes on to say that while Cartoon Network won’t get new episodes, Lucasfilm is continuing production on new story arcs. Disney XD looks like the likely home for those stories.
That blows a Death Star-sized hole in Cartoon Network’s lineup. Because of Disney’s new plans with Lucasfilm, Cartoon Network has to cancel a show that was still doing well for them. It also axed Young Justice and Green Lantern for more traditional, low ratings reasons. 2013 is off to a rough start for the channel’s more action-oriented offerings.
Star Wars Detours was an animated comedy from the Seth Green and Matthew Senreich team that brings us Robot Chicken. According to the Lucasfilm release, it sounds like that show has been force choked. “Detours was conceived and produced before we decided to move forward with the new Star Wars trilogy, and in the wake of that decision, Lucasfilm has reconsidered whether launching an animated comedy prior to the launch of Episode VII makes sense,” the release reads. “As a result, we’ve decided to postpone the release of Detours until a later date.”
By “later date,” I’m thinking they mean, “You will see Mickey Mouse become a Sith Lord before this show sees the light of day.”
