Peter Murphy, best known as the front man of the seminal gothic rock band Bauhaus, seems to be in competition with Michelle Shocked to see which relic of 80s/early 90s college radio can get more publicity for entirely negative reasons.
As first noticed by the eagle-eyed 80s alternative rock fans at Slicing up Eyeballs yesterday Murphy was being held in a Southern California jail while facing DUI, felony hit-and-run, and meth possession charges related to an incident in which he allegedly rear ended a vehicle and then fled the scene as reported in the Glendale News-Press.
Essentially, what appears to have happened is that Murphy rear-ended a car in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale, injuring the driver of that car. Murphy then tried to flee the scene into Los Angeles proper but a concerned bystander followed him and called the police because ““he was afraid [Murphy] would kill someone with his driving,” according to the police. This same person then blocked Murphy’s path with his pickup truck until Los Angeles police arrived, who detained Murphy until Glendale police arrived.
Complicating matters, a “small bag” of methamphetamine was found in the LAPD patrol car where Murphy was being detained. Murphy is saying the meth wasn’t his, which isn’t entirely implausible since presumably other suspects were held in the back seat of the car before him, but the police are of course saying that he was merely trying to discard the bag.
Murphy was reportedly very confused and out of it, a condition he blamed on jet lag due to a recent flight from Turkey, where he has lived since 1992. He said he hadn’t been drinking nor had he taken any drugs that day other than his usual prescription drugs for depression, which fans of Bauhaus will not be surprised to hear he suffers from.
The news is particularly ill-timed for Murphy, since it comes on the heels of his announcement of a big, 49 date North American/European tour this year to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of Bauhaus’s formation as a band. Thus far there’s no official word yet as to whether this incident has put those plans in jeopardy.
