I know I said this before, but 2013 is shaping up to be a really, really bad year for animated movies. I mean, even worse than 2012. Which saw the sub-par “Brave” take home the Oscar and the awfully childish “Hotel Transylvania” get nominated for a Golden Globe.
So how can 2013 be worse than last year? Well, for one thing, the first big-budget animation has Nicolas Cage (no, really) voice the lead role. And how about all those sequels and prequels? There’s “Despicable Me 2″, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2″, “Monsters University” and, what else… oh, yeah, “Planes”, a “Cars” spin-off. So creative!
Unfortunately, even one of the very few (semi-) original ideas to be turned into an animated movie this year seems to have been botched by lazy writing. I’m talking about “Epic”, the Blue Sky Studios-produced film that’s set to premiere in May.
Do you know how you can tell this is bad? Because only someone really desperate and insecure would throw Pitbull’s name in the trailer to try to draw in the crowds.
And don’t even get me started on the “jokes”. Or the “hidden” moral theme with the forest’s destruction, which would lead to the entire world’s disappearance. Uhm, have you ever heard of subtlety? Anyway, here’s the trailer in case you don’t have anything better to do with two minutes of your life.
