Filmbuff Online reports that UFC superstar Georges St-Pierre will play Batroc the Leaper in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the sequel to 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger.”

Since I know next to nothing about the Captain America universe–I read DC Comics as a kid–I’ll let FBO’s Rich Drees take over. Here’s “Bartoc: The Explanation.”

Batroc is a costumed mercenary who is skilled in the martial art known as savate. Although he was portrayed as an accomplished fighter his French accent often seemed, to this Marvel Comics reader at least, to be overwritten to the point of ridiculous, although in recent years it has seemed to be written a bit more realistically.

Sacre bleu, that sounds like a ringing endorsement!

Drees points out that the rogues’ gallery for “Winter Soldier” is getting very crowded: Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier, Frank Grillo as Crossbones, Toby Jones reprising his role as Arnim Zola. One villain is ideal. Two can work if a screenwriter staggers their introductions (think “The Dark Knight”). Beyond that, it’s risky balancing agendas and screen time. Plus, what if one character is far superior to the rest?

If everyone gets their way, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will be in theaters April 4, 2014.
