Season Nine American Idol contestant Crystal Bowersox is following Idol stars Clay Aiken, Fantasia Barrino and Constantine Maroulis to the bright lights of Broadway. She’ll star in a new production of “Always… Patsy Cline” as the country legend. This is the 50th anniversary of Cline’s death in a plane crash at age 30.
The musical is based on the real life friendship between Cline and a fan named Louise Seger. They met at a honky tonk and continued corresponding until Cline’s untimely death. She signed her letters, “Love Always, Patsy Cline,” which is where the play’s name comes from. The show features 27 of Cline’s country hits. Oscar and Emmy nominee Annette O’ Toole will portray Seger.
It’s scheduled to open in August, but the production hasn’t announced theaters or dates yet. This isn’t Bowersox’s first acting gig. She had a role in the ABC drama Burden of Proof. Bowersox finished as runner-up to Season Nine Idol winner Lee DeWyze. It wasn’t a great year for the show’s pop prowess. DeWyze’s debut album sold only 150,000 copies, and RCA dropped him before releasing his second. Bowersox is currently promoting her second CD, “All That for This.”
