When it was first announced last month that Funny or Die was making its own Steve Jobs biopic, I thought, like some people, that it wasn’t going to be an actual movie, that it would probably be a fake trailer or a five minute short. But apparently it isn’t. The film –”iSteve”- will run a little over an hour and premiere on the website on April 15.
Even more intriguing is the film’s trailer ( available right here), which at first glance, seems to take its subject matter with the utmost level of seriousness and gravitas. But then you realize that all of the dialogue seems to resemble standard biopic boilerplate like, “The only thing Steve Jobs cares about is Steve Jobs” and “I Am APPLE!!!”
All of that overheated dialogue is being shouted by the likes of James “Dr. Venture” Urbaniak and an intentionally miscast Justin Long as Jobs. It’s somewhat underplayed and subtle but the trailer does seem promising.
The trailer also reminds me of an equally subtle but long forgotten 5 minute short that ran on Comedy Central in the mid-90s: “Spunk: The Tonya Harding Story”. It’s dated but fans of the Lifetime Movie Network will appreciate how well it captures the beats of a hastily produced made for TV cash-in.
