It was about time someone took Thor Chris Hemsworth seriously. That was the first thought that popped to my mind when hearing about “Rush”, an upcoming racing drama directed by two-time Oscar winner Ron Howard. And written by Peter Morgan, a double Academy Award nominee himself.
Honestly though, I never thought “Rush” could turn out to be a masterpiece. Or even a serious Oscar contender. After all, how many solid and believable racing movies do you remember to have had an okay storyline and decently developed characters? None? That sounds about right.
And yet “Rush” could be the exception to the rule. At least that’s my take after checking out the film’s first trailer. Sure, the thing is going to have plenty of your run-of-the-mill action, thrill and car crashing. But there seems to be a lot of focus on the story too, the drama behind ‘70s racing and especially on the protagonists.
Hemsworth will be playing British racing driver James Hunt, Formula 1 champion in 1976, while Daniel Brühl (“Inglourious Basterds”, “The Bourne Ultimatum”) will be the co-lead as F1 legend Niki Lauda, three-time world champion.
“Rush” will follow the two’s incredible late ‘70s rivalry and mostly the events following Lauda’s near-fatal accident from 1976. The Austrian got behind the wheel just weeks after surviving the crash, so, all in all, it sounds like a solid, dramatic and intense story.
Watch the trailer below and let us know what you think of it. Is “Rush” an Oscar contender? Yes, no, maybe?
