Let me see if I have the premise of the upcoming comedy “The Internship” right: Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are white-collar guys who suddenly lose their jobs and have no employment opportunities to speak of, meaning they have to take internships on the corporate campus of Google.
Aside from the requisite broad ethnic humor and physical gags, just about every ensuing joke is about how these two 40-year-old men in 2013 don’t know anything about the Internet or Silicon Valley culture, even though the Internet has been around for most of their adult lives, and it’s hard to work in the Bay Area and not have even a little bit of Valleyspeak seeping through. It’s also a movie, again set in 2013, that thinks a “Flashdance” joke is just hilarious.
I’ve got a feeling the whole thing ends with them realizing that one, they belong at Google after all, and two, Google is awesome! (It must be, the entire movie looks like one long commercial for it.)
Here’s the second trailer for the movie. I’m a “Wedding Crashers” fan, Vaughn and Wilson are capable of being funny, and I’m a sucker for Rose Byrne with her Australian accent. But this one still doesn’t look so promising:
