The Wrap is reporting that former Pushing Daisies star Lee Pace is in negotiations to be the big bad in “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Pace was up for the lead role as hero Star Lord, but that went to Chris Pratt. Marvel was impressed with Pace’s audition, though.
The Guardians are like an intergalactic version of Marvel’s Avengers. They’ve been interacting with the The Avengers onscreen and in the books to help increase their profile. Iron Man joined the team for a comic book story arc. They also appeared in the recently canceled Earth’s Mightiest Heroes cartoon on Disney. With this big budget blockbuster targeting an August 2014 release, none of this stuff is coincidental. It wouldn’t surprise me to hear there is a Guardians of the Galaxy cartoon just waiting to show up on Disney XD.
If the Guardians become mainstream superstars, this may be Marvel’s most impressive trick yet. Iron Man and Thor weren’t very well known before their movies, but had dedicated comic fanbases. The Guardians are a cult status book even among comic readers. So far the movie cast isn’t exactly filled with A-listers, either. Along with Pratt and Pace are Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Michael Rooker as Yondu and former WWE champ Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer. This could be a true test of Disney’s marketing magic.
