The Facts of Life: George Clooney and Nancy McKeon

This clip, from a 1985 episode of The Facts of Life, just suddenly popped into my head last night, and sure enough, there it was on YouTube. This is from an episode, in the later years of the series, in which Blaire, Jo, Natalie and Tootie have been entered in a singing contest, their manager is a  12-year-old boy (Mackenzie Astin), and he has named them “Sexy Lingerie”:

The above is notable for quite a few reasons, beyond even the vintage clothes, hair, music and production values.

There’s the presence of then-cast member George Clooney with a mullet, the cameo by then-music star El Debarge, the 12-year-old knowing what “sexy lingerie” is, and the idea of George Clooney scoring with a girl treated as something of a punchline. There’s also the line “keep the ‘G’ in ‘group,’” which I can’t for the life of me figure out the meaning of. The closing freeze-frame/signature thing is an ’80s sitcom trope that I sort of miss. And finally, where’s Mrs. Garrett?
