Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the general story goes, left pro wrestling to be a movie star, and now that his movie career has reached a certain height, probably won’t be returning to WWE again. But that doesn’t mean he’s done with weekly TV.
Johnson is working with Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg on a so-far untitled HBO series on which the ex-Rock will both star and executive-produce, Deadline reported this week. The half-hour comedy/drama sounds suspiciously Entourage-like:
The untitled project chronicles the lives of athletes — some retired, some still active — living in Miami. Johnson will play one of them.
Makes sense, I suppose; Johnson certainly has the physique to play an ex-athlete, and in fact, he was one, in that very city, having played football for the University of Miami prior to his wrestling career.
Steve Levinson wrote the pilot, to be directed by Peter Berg, the man responsible for one of the greatest TV pilots of all time, that of Friday Night Lights.
