A “Mission Impossible 5” sounds like a pretty good idea… said absolutely nobody ever, and yet Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions have officially announced they’re going forward with the action franchise’s fifth title.
And surprise, surprise, Tom Cruise is already on board to reprise his iconic (for sixth-graders, middle-aged housewives, and 30 something comic book fans living in their moms’ basements) Ethan Hunt role.
Don’t get me wrong, I actually kind of, sort of liked the first “MI” movie and even the third one was a good bit of fun, but enough already! On the other hand, the last “Mission Impossible” film, “Ghost Protocol”, did make a boatload of money (close to $600 mil on a $145 million budget), so it does make sense for the studios to continue milking the cash cow this series has been over the past two decades.
For now, Cruise is the only fellow cast in “MI 5”, with even the writer and director’s names being kept under wraps. Chances are Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton and Simon Pegg will all be asked to co-star in the movie, with Christopher McQuarrie (“Jack Reacher”) likely to direct. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet.
After all, Cruise has “All You Need Is Kill” and “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” next on his slate, so maybe, just maybe, he’ll remember the times he used to be an Oscar favorite, realize he’s 50 frigging years old and drop the action hero act before “MI 5” will start production. Wouldn’t that be something?
