So, we met the Mother. Even if Ted hasn’t yet…
CBS’ How I Met Your Mother made history Monday night, when it at last introduced the long-unseen character of The Mother. No, Ted Mosby didn’t meet her yet, no, we don’t know her name, and her introduction didn’t take place until the last scene of the finale of the show’s eighth season.
The unnamed mother, introduced buying a train ticket in the episode’s final scene, is played by actress Cristin Milioti, a 27-year-old New Jersey native andBroadway veteran who starred in “Once,” and has also appeared on 30 Rock and in last year’s movie “Sleepwalk With Me.” She will presumably become a regular on the series’ ninth season, the show’s last.
The series’ eighth season was wildly uneven, with a handful of standout episodes often overshadowed by a sense that the show was dragging its feet and stalling before the Mother reveal. Then came the announcement that this season won’t be the last after all, with a ninth one picked up earlier this year.
Speaking of stretching, this entire season led up to the wedding of Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders), but it didn’t even take place in the final episode. Here’s hoping the entire ninth season doesn’t end up being the entire wedding in slow motion.
And while we’re on the subject of weddings, my wife and I, who have been watching the show since Season 2, got married six years ago this coming Sunday. I was sort of hoping that Ted will have met the mother by our sixth wedding anniversary.
