With “Oblivion” out for only a few weeks and “After Earth” set for a May 31 release, you’d think the slate is pretty full already for post-apocalyptic sci-fi flicks in Hollywood, right? Wrong, or at least wrong, according to some.
Namely, according to Tobey Maguire, Chris Pine, Amanda Seyfried and Chiwetel Ejiofor, all of which are set to star in an upcoming movie called “Z for Zachariah”. Based on a novel by Robert C. O’Brien published in 1974, the film will likely distinguish itself with a more minimalistic look, less spectacular special effects and a bigger focus on character development.
That’s right, “Z for Zachariah” is going to be an indie. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be made on a $1 million budget. After all, Maguire, but also Matthew Plouffe, Skuli Malmquist, Thor Sigurjonsson and Joni Sighvatsson will produce, so chances are the group will back the project with at least… $2 mil. Maybe they’ll go as high as $3, who knows?
In any case, with that all-star cast and Craig Zobel (“Compliance”) on board to direct, “Z for Zachariah” has everything it needs to be already called a future hit. For now, Pine can be seen in “Star Trek Into Darkness”, Seyfried has “A Million Ways to Die in the West” coming, while Ejiofor is to star in the extremely promising “Twelve Years a Slave”.
