E! Online is reporting that Jennifer Hudson is the first American Idol alum to take a judge’s seat. According to E! sources, Fox would like to bring Kelly Clarkson and either Clay Aiken or Adam Lambert back as judges too. They want to go back to a three-person panel, the number of judges Idol had in stronger days. Once the panel added a fourth judge, they’ve been going through them on a regular basis. The judge drama has especially overshadowed the winners the past two years.
The alum return would bring back beloved former contestants, and hopefully remind viewers that Idol has created some superstars. The Voice and The X-Factor can’t really say that yet. Part of that could be attributed to how long it takes albums to come out. Idol is moving on that front too. Season 12 winner Candice Glover’s first album Music Speaks is hitting stores July 16.
Fox, of course, isn’t commenting on the rumors. They haven’t officially parted ways with judges Keith Urban, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, so they really can’t address these reports. Minaj’s only official statement is that she enjoyed doing Idol. Urban has said he’d love to return. Reports say Idol is finished paying the kind of mega salaries Carey and J-Lo commanded. It’s hard to imagine Carey would take a huge paycut to stay.
