Ever since it played to limited box office effect way back in 1993, fans of Richard Linklater‘s cult lament for stoned pre-summer schools days gone by, the delightful ‘Dazed and Confused,’ have hoped for a sequel. Well, there may finally be some light at the end of that nicely toasted, tightly packed tunnel.
During a recent Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, the filmmaker (celebrating the release of his most recent collaboration with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, ‘Before Midnight’), confirmed the script is in place and he is raring to go. It will be “a college comedy,” but on the downside, Linklater also confirms he plans on “mixing it up with a big ensemble,” and that none of the original characters will be featured.
While that last bit of information is sure to harsh more than a few fan’s buzz, the good news is that, after years of discussing the possibility of such a project (as far back as 2010 it was going under the title ‘That’s What I’m Talking About’), it looks like the “spiritual” follow up to ‘Dazed’ will happen. In fact, Linklater is hoping to get started later this summer. According to the AV Club story, that means “the film could hit in 2014 at the earliest,” and while none of the characters will be the same, that doesn’t mean Linklater won’t look to some in the former cast to bring the proper style and feel to the film. Hey, as long as we can have Matthew McConaughey returning as a lecherous perpetual student, we’re fine.
