blue_jasmineThere are very few certainties in the cinematic world, but I’m pretty sure of this – you can love Woody Allen, you can hate him, but you can’t ignore him.

One of the most prolific Hollywood directors… ever, Allen has been overhyped (“Midnight in Paris”, best original screenplay?) and unfairly bashed (“To Rome with Love”) in the past few years, but never has he been overlooked by a critic or film buff.

Yet his next project hasn’t really been capturing the headlines, even if it’s slated to enter theaters as soon as next month. Sadly, the first trailer for “Blue Jasmine” is unlikely to grab a lot of attention either as, to be frank, it’s a little boring.

There are also a couple of things that don’t work. Cate Blanchett as a neurotic middle-aged woman cheated on by Alec Baldwin? Not buying it. Also, if you’re going to have a cast so diverse as to include names like Louis C.K., Peter Sarsgaard and Michael Stuhlbarg in it, why not show them off?

On the flipside, Bobby Cannavale looks pretty awesome (and a little more down to earth than in Boardwalk Empire), plus Woody Allen’s transition from comedy back to drama is fairly intriguing.
