Get ready for more pumped up Greeks, slow-motion slaughter, and oceans of CG blood as the long awaited sequel (of sorts) to ‘300‘ gets its first trailer. Previously titled ‘The Battle of Artemisium,’ ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ will focus on a naval battle between invading Queen Artemisia I of Caria (Eva Green) and her Athenian counterpart Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton). Also returning are Lena Headey as Queen Gorgo of Sparta, David Wenham as Dilios, and Rodrigo Santoro as the God King Xerxes. Apparently, this new slick confront happens at the same time that Leonidas is taking on the Persian horde.
This time around, Zack Snyder, who directed the original film, is present as producer and co-writer. Still, it seems like handpicked replacement Noam Murro has all the previous ‘300’ moves down pat. More concerning, however, is the new helmers history. He has only one other film on his resume, the relatively small (and unexceptional) ‘Smart People,’ not exactly the background to take on an epic action adventure. Oh, and source author Frank Miller is nowhere to be found. Still, the trailer is impressive. Take a look:
Intriguing. Still, color us a bit…reserved. After all, the first ‘300’ was lightning in a bottle. It had Gerard Butler in all his muscled, beared, overripe machismo glory and the narrative (one against many) gave the movie a doomed, desperate air. There’s a bit of the “been there, done that” here, but we’ll reserve true judgment until it hits theaters…in March of 2014. Hopefully, it’s worth the wait.
