Gangsta rap and Broadway shows don’t exactly seem like a perfect match. But according to the Associated Press, director Kenny Leon is at work on a musical with roots in Tupac Shakur’s rap.
“Holler If Ya Hear Me” is set in a present day Midwestern industrial city and focus on two childhood friends and their struggles. It takes its title from a 2Pac song off his second album. Afeni Shakur, Tupac’s mother, is a producer on the show. I guess something like this had to happen eventually. There are Broadway shows based on the music of Patsy Cline, 80s glam metal and just about every musical genre in between.
Producers are hoping to bring this show to Broadway for the 2013-14 season. If it’s successful, it could definitely break down some musical and cultural barriers.
