Show of hands, how many of you would have suggested Sly Stallone and Arnie Schwarzenegger to retire after their “Bullet to the Head” and “The Last Stand” solo vehicles flopped at the box-office? That many? Well, I can’t say I’m surprised, since most people are looking for their action heroes elsewhere – Jason Statham, The Rock, even Channing Tatum.
But the Terminator and Rambo might not be as washed up as… well, they look. After all, they still have the “Expendables” franchise, plus a potentially huge hit in “Escape Plan”. Formerly titled “The Tomb”, this is set to come out in October and looks exactly how a Stallone – Schwarzenegger flick should.
True, it may be a little old-fashioned for new fans of the shoot’em up (hit’em up?) action genre, but it has plenty of chuckles (“you hit like a vegetarian”), a surprisingly solid cast (Jim Caviezel, Vincent D’Onofrio, Vinnie Jones, Sam Neill, 50 Cent and Amy Ryan), plus, dare I say it, a somewhat original plot.
The storyline goes a little something like this – Sly is a security expert that specializes in breaking out of hi-tech prisons, but that ultimately finds himself way over his head in a penitentiary where Caviezel is the big bad wolf, I mean warden.
There, our veteran hero has to partner up with shady inmate Arnie (what’s with the goatee, by the way?), which I’m guessing turns out to be a good guy underneath as well. Like I said, somewhat original, not exactly Oscar winning. Definitely fun though.
